Russian “waste” creates major challenges

Up to 30% of the ammunition used by the Russians does not detonate as intended. This can be due to errors in production, errors in operation or other factors. This ammunition will remain in the ground and remain lethal until it is removed

In addition to ammo that has been attempted to be fired, we also see a lot of ammo that has been left behind. This may be because the Russians have been in a hurry to leave, but it may also have been done deliberately – so-called booby traps or improvised explosive devices – to harm locals returning to their homes

Unfortunately, we are starting to see the consequences of this as locals return to their homes in the areas around Kiev. Even worse, it is most often the children who are affected, as they are curious and tinker with these dangerous objects.

Since we do not see others addressing this challenge, we intend to explore the possibility of sending demining contributions to the areas around Kiev. These should make it safer for locals to return to their homes and use their local areas.
